The Present Continuous
The Present Continuous
is used when the action is happening at the time of speaking. The action is not
over, it’s not yet done, it’s still happening.
The cat is smelling
the lobster.
The men are fixing
the truck.
A:What’s your dad doing right now?
B: He is playing golf.
A: What’s that noise? What’s happening?
B: The cats are fighting on the roof again.
In some cases, we
use the Present Continuous to talk about things that started in the past and
are still happening at the time of speaking, although they are not necessarily
happening at the moment.
A:Where’s your sister?
B: She’s in France. She’s studying fashion designing. (My sister is not necessarily learning fashion designing now; maybe she’s eating breakfast, maybe she’s taking a shower, etc., but, she started fashion designing at a point in the past, and that action is not yet over.)
We also use the Present Continuous when we talk about things that are happening around the time of speaking.
B: Yes. He informed me about it last night.
Some examples of
time expressions that are used with this pattern: today, this week, tonight,
this month, this year
We use the Present Continuous when we talk about things that are changing at the time of speaking.
