MUST

Again, some ESL students find modals a bit confusing. The most confusing of all, according to them, is the modal MUST.

The modal MUST can be used in multiple ways.

First, we use MUST when we want to say that it is absolutely necessary to do something. This is the same as HAVE TO.

 Please note the following examples:

I must submit my homework tomorrow.

(In this situation, it is really, really necessary to submit your homework. If you don’t submit your homework, your teacher will be upset, and you will get a very low grade. )

Jack has diabetes. He must exercise and he must stop eating too much sugar.

In the examples given above, the modal MUST can be substituted by HAVE TO.

Examples:

I have to submit my homework tomorrow. = I must submit my homework tomorrow.

He must exercise.= He has to exercise.

He must stop eating too much sugar.= He has to stop eating too much sugar.

Second, we use MUST when we express a guess, but a very logical guess, because it is based on fact. Sounds confusing? Sorry. Ha ha ha. Let me just give you some examples so that we can imagine the situation.

Jack: I live just 100 meters away from the airport.

Jane: Really?! Your place must be really noisy!

Jack did not tell Jane that it’s so noisy in his place, but of course, Jane can imagine the situation, she guessed that Jack’s place is really noisy, based on the fact that airplanes make a lot of noise when landing and taking off, and Jack lives near that place.

 Another example:

Jack: I have been working for 12 hours.

Jane: Oh Jack, you must be really tired.

Jack did not tell Jane that he is really tired, but of course, we know that if we work for 12 hours, we get really, really tired.  In Jane’s answer, she was sure, she was convinced, that Jack was really tired.

MUST

I must submit my homework tomorrow.

Jack has diabetes. He must exercise and he must stop eating too much sugar.

I have to submit my homework tomorrow. = I must submit my homework tomorrow.

He must exercise.= He has to exercise.

He must stop eating too much sugar.= He has to stop eating too much sugar.

Jack: I live just 100 meters away from the airport.

Jane: Really?! Your place must be really noisy!

Jack: I have been working for 12 hours.

Jane: Oh Jack, you must be really tired.
