This is another important lesson in English grammar. Students of English as a Second Language (ESL) often ask questions about modals.

We use SHOULD when we want to express something which we think is the right thing to do. We use this modal when we want to give advice or express our opinion.

Take a look at the following examples:

You look sleepy. You should go to bed now. (I think that going to bed is the right thing for you to do.)

You are gaining weight. You should exercise more often. (I think that in order to be healthy, exercising more often is the right thing for you to do.)

 Should is NOT the same as must. Take a look at the following examples:

1.   You should study hard. (I think that studying hard is the right thing to do.)

2.   You must study hard. (There is no option given; you have no other choice, you must study hard even though or even if you don’t like it.)
