So and Such
When should we use So, and when should we use Such?
We use So after an adjective. In grammar, we call this Intensifier. It makes the adjective more intense, or stronger. We will discuss Intensifiers in another blog post.
This ramen is delicious.
This ramen is so delicious. How did you cook this? What ingredients did
you use?
In the second sentence, the degree of the adjective Delicious became
stronger, or more intense.
Other examples:
She is pretty.
She is so pretty. (She is
very pretty.)
We use SUCH + Noun
She is so pretty.
She is such a pretty woman.
They are such pretty women.
(We should not use A because the word Women
is Plural.
Canada is a beautiful country.
Canada is such a beautiful country.
This TV show is so boring.
This is such a boring TV show.
But NOT: This is so boring
TV show.= This is wrong, don’t construct your sentence this way.
いつSoを使用する必要があり、いつSuchを使用する必要がありますか?
This ramen is delicious.
This ramen is so delicious. How did you cook this? What ingredients did
you use?
2番目の文では、形容詞Deliciousの程度が強くなったり、強くなったりしました。
She is pretty.
She is so pretty. (She is
very pretty.)
She is so pretty.
She is such a pretty woman.
Compare:
They are such pretty women.
(Womenという単語は複数形であるため、Aを使用しないでください。)
Canada is a beautiful country.
Canada is such a beautiful country.
This is such a boring TV show.
