The Past Simple and the Past Continuous

In Past Simple, we use the past form of the verb to indicate an action that is complete.

Examples:

 I ate an apple.

I ate an apple last night.

In the two examples given above, both actions are complete. The completion of the action is our focus. In Past Simple, we don’t have to always indicate the Past Time Expression such as last night, two weeks ago, etc., unless it is absolutely necessary to mention it. When we hear or read a sentence and the verb is in the past form, we automatically know that the action is over.                                                                                                                                                  

The same is not true in Past Continuous.

There are two ways to use the Past Continuous.

FIRST, we use it when we talk about two things that happened at the same time. One action was in progress and then another action happened.

 Examples:

I was eating dinner when it started to rain.

I was eating dinner- First action, it was not yet finished…

And then…

It started to rain- This is the second action, it happened while the first action was still happening.

SECOND, we use the Past Continuous when we talk about an action that was happening at an exact time.

Compare the two examples:

 Past Simple Questions/Sentences.

Question: What did you do last night?

Answer: I ate ramen last night.

 

Past Continuous Questions/Sentences:

Question: What were you doing at 7:00 last night?

Answer: I was eating ramen at 7:00 last night.

 Question: What were you doing when the phone rang?

Answer: I was doing my homework when the phone rang.

So, when do we use the Past Simple, and when do we use the Past Continuous? Again, this depends on the speaker. English is a language, and English learners should not be too technical about it.

第2に、正確な時間に起こっていた行動について話すときは、過去形を使用します。

2つの例を比較してください。

Question: What did you do last night?

Answer: I ate ramen last night.

過去の継続的な質問/文：

Question: What were you doing at 7:00 last night?

Answer: I was eating ramen at 7:00 last night.

 Question: What were you doing when the phone rang?

Answer: I was doing my homework when the phone rang.
