TOEIC Lecture Part 8

Many students of English as a Second Language or ESL do not just learn speaking. They also want to take English exams. The most popular English exam among employees in Korea and in Japan is the TOEIC exam, or Test of English for International Communication.

Here is TOEIC Lesson 8! Enjoy reading!

While the engineering team’s ___________ has improved, overall productivity has been in a noticeable decline for the past three years.

a. motivate

b. motives

c. motivational

d. motivation

The answer is so easy to spot, but let’s dissect it just the same.

Note: The engineering team’s ________________... has improved...

Engineering team’s is a possessive form, and being such, the blank requires a noun.

That noun has improved. Now, look at the choices, all derived from the same root word.

Motivate- This is a verb.

Motives- This is a noun, but it’s plural (it ends with an -s), and the verb HAS is singular; therefore, this is not a good choice.

Motivational- This is an adjective, it’s not the right choice.

Therefore, Choice D, motivation, is the right answer.

Again, I would like to repeat and establish that these explanations are from the point of view of the test-takers who are not so familiar with the structure of the English language, and whose main purpose is to get a good TOEIC score.
